Parting Ways with MWF

Recently the Custer Rod and Gun Club Board of Directors decided that it was in the best interest of our club to break our ties with the Montana Wild Life Federation. This decision was made in order to make the most effective use of the memberships limited funds; as well as protect the members personal information, as the MWF was requesting the detailed personal information of our club members. Additionally, many club members were upset that the club was supporting a group that is lobbying for certain wildlife management programs that are directly opposed by many of the ranchers and club members in Eastern Montana.

Below is a letter we received from MWF. CR&GC President Keith Hall requested that the letter be posted on the website for the membership to see…

Custer Rod & Gun Club

Miles City, MT 59301

Dear Keith:

Thank you for taking the time to talk last week about the Custer Rod & Gun Club and the
Montana Wildlife Federation (MWF).

I was saddened to hear of your Board’s decision to disaffiliate from MWF. However, I
absolutely understand your reasons for doing so. I think there is no question that MWF as a
statewide organization failed to effectively reach out to your club and deliver results for your
members over a period of many years.

Even though I understand why you want to leave the Federation, I hope you will reconsider.
This is a time of significant change for MWF. As Montana’s oldest conservation
organization, we have an unmatched legacy of success in protecting wildlife, habitat, and
access. At the same time, any organization of our tenure will occasionally need to be
renewed and reinvigorated.

As the new Executive Director, I have made it my personal priority to reinvent our business
operations, rebuild our membership, and reopen lines of communication with our affiliates
all over the state. In addition to restructuring our operations to enhance value for affiliates
and members, MWF is also directing considerable attention to refocusing our policy agenda,
including expanded attention to issues in Eastern Montana.

MWF includes people from every part of the state and from all walks of life. Our members
include people from a diverse array of professional fields and all political stripes. This
diverse group of people is drawn together by an intense commitment to a core set of shared
values: healthy wildlife populations, plenty of habitat, and public access. Elected officials,
agency managers, other conservation groups, and private businesses all know that when
someone speaks on behalf of MWF, they are representing the views of thousands of other
Montanans who care about fish, wildlife, and habitat. Over the years, this has helped us
ensure that Montana has the best wildlife, the best habitat, and the best access in the West.

I realize that your club’s decision to leave the Montana Wildlife Federation is the result of
years of neglect, and I respect your assessment of the situation. At the same time, I do hope
that you and the Board will consider the substantial benefits you and your members can
derive from rebuilding a relationship between our organizations. With a few simple steps, I
think we could deliver more results for your members and, at the same time, enhance your
club’s role in our statewide organization.

Thanks again for your time. Please feel free to call me at any time if you have additional
ideas or comments on how MWF can do a better job reaching out to our members and
affiliate clubs. You can reach me at (406) 438-6478 or dchadwick@mtwf.org.

Sincerely,
Dave Chadwick
Executive Director

Lost a Cherished Club Member This Week

It is with great sorrow and regret that we post the news that beloved club member John Hartwick has passed away. We don’t have the information to post a proper memorial message yet. All we know is what has been reported to us by his family, which is that he was found in his chair Monday morning, January 27th. Apparently from heart failure.

John could often be found busting clays on the trap range at Spotted Eagle, as well as volunteering his time to teach the Youth, and Ladies Trap classes. John has given much to this club and community, and will be missed greatly.

We’ll update this post if we receive any further information.

2014 Annual Meeting and Banquet – Recap

1/18/14 Annual Meeting and Banquet

Dave Chadwick and Nick Gevock from Montana Wildlife Federation gave a short presentation about what the Montana Federation does and passed around an email sigh-up sheet for anyone wishing to receive email notifications from MWF. They also made themselves available both before and after the meeting to discuss MWF issues with anyone wanting more in depth conversations with them and to find out what issues hunters and land owners deal with in Eastern Montana that they don’t necessarily deal with in Western Montana. They put together an impromptu breakfast meeting Sunday morning with anyone who wanted to continue the conversation even more in depth.

Club President Todd Birch gave a brief President’s Report, highlighting some of the things accomplished over the last year, including purchasing a new mower for the trap range, securing the Yellowstone Caviar Grant which provided proper electrical to all the trap houses at Spotted Eagle, the new Action Pistol Shooting and improvements to the Sunday Creek range, etc.

Cheri Reed read the minutes from last year’s Annual Meeting, and the minutes were approved.

Cheri Reed gave the Treasurer’s Report which was approved.

Keith Hall made a motion that starting in Feb. the club puts $50 in a pot, and an additional $10 per month that the pot is not won. We will draw a members name at each monthly members meeting to determine the winner of the pot. If the member is not present at the meeting, the pot will carry over to the next month. This motion is with the intent to encourage members, other than just the directors, to attend the monthly meetings and get involved in the club activities, and in that spirit an amendment was added to bar club directors or officers from being eligible to win the pot since they are already attending the meetings. Both the amendment and the motion passed.

The following nominees were elected to the Board of Directors:
Club President – Keith Hall (2-year term)
Vice President – CJ Truesdale (1-year term)
Club Treasurer – Cheri Reed (2-year term)
Club Secretary – Jesse Smith (1-year term)
Director – Todd Birch (2-year term)
Director – Jim Keith (2-year term)
Director – Jeremy Kueffler (2-year term)
Director – Ken Boschee (2-year term)
Director – Jeff Williams (1-year term)

Erin O’Conner and Suzanne Seaba representing Pheasants Forever thanked the club for allowing them to use the trap range and clubhouse for their Youth Hunter’s program in 2013. They also said they are now seeking applicants for children to participate in the program this year.

Jim Posewitz, author of Beyond Fair Chaise gave a short talk about the conservation heritage of the Easter Montana area, and how living in the area inspired Theodore Roosevelt’s legacy of conservation.

The following door prizes were raffled off throughout the evening:
– rifle bore cleaning rod – won by Lawrence Torstenbo
– gift certificate for the Rib & Chop House – Won by Todd Birch
– S&W knife – won by Ron Hurr
– Ruger American .270 rifle – won by Dean Seifert

Being a club director requires more than just showing up to a meeting once a month. Custer Rod and Gun Club directors are the backbone of our club and perform MANY of the duties that keep the club running including anything from mowing the grass at the ranges, meeting with City Council members, organizing and running the many events and activities put on by the club each year, leading work parties, as well as serving on and attending sub-committee meetings. For the sake of the club, we respectfully ask anyone who is nominated for a Directors position, to be sure they are willing and available to commit the time and effort required for these tasks, before they accept the nomination.

President – currently held by Todd Birch

Action Pistol Jackpot Match Results

We would like to thank all of you who came out and supported our shoot. Everyone had a great time and the match went off as well as we could have ever hoped for our first match. It was great to meet you all. You are the reason the match went so smoothly that even the staff were able to relax and have a really enjoyable day.

We couldn’t have done it without your participation, and we are greatly humbled by all of those contestants who chose to donate their winnings back to the club. That was above and beyond anything we had hoped for, and thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Now, enough of me rambling. Here’s the results everyone’s been waiting for:
